    Hybrid Moth Orchid

    Phalaenopsis hybrid (violacea X unknown)

This beautiful orchid is also fragrant when grown in humid conditions, thanks to it's Phalaenopsis violacea parent.

    Scientific classification:

    Kingdom: Plantae
    Division: Angiosperms
    Class: Monocots
    Order: Asparagales
    Family: Orchidaceae
    Genus: Phalaenopsis

    Natural habitat and growing conditions:

Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytes (growing on trees, but not as a parasite) or lithophytes (growing on rocks) native to tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia, China, India, Australia and surrounding islands. There are approximately 60 species in the genus, and many thousands of hybrids have been created. They generally like bright light but not direct sunlight, warm conditions, and moderate water.

    Notes of interest:

    • Most Phalaenopsis flowers aren't fragrant, but the species violacea (one of the parents of this hybrid) is highly fragrant.
    • Phalaenopsis flowers can last 2-6 months; plants often re-bloom on old flower spikes if given good conditions.
